White Peterson Hires Two New Associates

White Peterson is pleased to announce the addition of two new associates, Kelsy Briggs and Daniel Goodman .

Ms. Briggs is a 2022 graduate of the University of Idaho College of Law. She became a member of the Idaho Bar and the U.S. District Court, District of Idaho on September 30, 2022. Kelsy will focus her practice in the areas of estate planning and probate, land use, municipal government and contracts.

Mr. Goodman is a 2022 graduate of the University of Idaho College of Law. He became a member of the Idaho Bar and the U.S. District Court, District of Idaho on October 3, 2022. Dan will focus his practice in the areas of municipal and local government, real estate development and land use law.

White Peterson is pleased to announce that Marc Bybee became shareholder in the firm on January 1, 2023. Mr. Bybee has practiced law at White Peterson since 2019. Prior to joining the firm, Marc was a Public Defender in Canyon County for six years.

Mr. Bybee earned his law degree from the University of Idaho College of Law in 2013. His practice focuses on local government, real estate, business law and civil litigation. Marc is a member of the Caldwell Chamber of Commerce and is currently enrolled in the Leadership Caldwell Class of 2023.

Bill Nichols Attends Exclusive Legal Conference

White Peterson attorney Bill Nichols , was invited to attend one of the nation’s premier legal educational conferences held in San Diego, CA from November 3–6, 2022. The American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys hosted their 29th annual Fall Summit, which included attendees from over 90 qualified estate planning law firms around the country.

The American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys is committed to providing cutting-edge legal education and practice management tools to transform the way their Member attorneys practice law. The Fall Summit is geared towards creating an environment for attorneys to grow personally and professionally, with the focus of the Fall Summit being Refresh and Reset: Academy Systems and Workflows. “It is incredibly important that our Members have a strong foundation for their law firms so they can operate efficiently. This event we focused on the power of systems and incorporating mindful leadership in order for law firms to help their clients create a lasting legacy,” said Sanford M. Fisch, CEO and co-founder of the American Academy.

Academy Co-Founders, Robert Armstrong and Sanford M. Fisch, kicked off the Summit on Thursday with a keynote address focused on management styles and employing effective leadership skills. Bill also received training on the newest developments in estate planning and elder law during the sessions: Practical Ethics for the Estate Planning Attorney, International Estate Planning Issues, Understanding and Leveraging New Technology, Demystifying Medicaid and Medicaid Compliant Annuities, and IRAs and Retirement Plans: What You Need to Know.

Marc Bybee Presents At American Planning Associate Conference

White Peterson attorney Marc Bybee presented and fielded questions at the Idaho Chapter of the American Planning Association’s 2022 Annual Conference held in Boise, Idaho from October 5-7, 2022. The group in attendance for this conference included a mix of both government and private industry planning professionals. Marc’s presentation was entitled “Property Rights, Regulatory Takings, and Idaho Case Law Update.” The presentation covered basic concepts relating to the origins and evolution of common law property rights, the constitutional basis for takings law, a practical review of the Idaho Attorney General’s regulatory takings checklist and briefly discussed recent Idaho Supreme Court caselaw relevant to Idaho land use issues. Of particular note, the presentation demonstrated how the regulatory takings checklist can be applied by government planners to respond to requests for a regulatory takings analysis. Regulatory takings are increasingly a growing area of concern for many local government planning departments.

William Nichols Presents At Annual Estate Planning Conference

At the 2022 Annual Estate Planning Conference sponsored by the Taxation and Estate Planning Section of the Idaho State Bar held in Boise, Idaho on September 22, 2022, White Peterson Managing Director Bill Nichols was one of four presenters on one of the session topics: “Planning for the Idaho Transplant.” As an Idaho and Oregon lawyer, Bill addressed issues specific to Oregonians moving to Idaho with an emphasis on the Oregon Estate Transfer Tax that will impact some former Oregon residents who still own Oregon assets at their deaths. Bill demonstrated how even a small amount of assets left in Oregon can result in tax owed to the Oregon Department of Revenue.
